Request for Decision Summary
This presentation details the City's demographics as captured by the 2018 Municipal Census. The City of Spruce Grove conducted its annual census between April 4 and May 31, 2018. During this period, a total of 14,417 addresses were enumerated and 52.2% of those households completed their census online. The population of the City of Spruce Grove has grown to 35,766, reflecting a 2.5% increase over 2017.

Proposed Motion
That the 2018 Municipal Census Demographic Report be received as information and that Aaron Bomback and Carolynn Grey be thanked for their presentation.
The City of Spruce Grove conducts a municipal census annually to obtain an accurate count of the city's population. The results of the census are used not only by the City for project and services planning, but by external entities such as school boards, local businesses, and entrepreneurs looking to bring businesses into our community. Updated population figures allow the City of Spruce Grove to access additional grant funding through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, the Gas Tax Fund, and the Municipal Policing Assistance Grant.

The 2018 municipal census took place between April 4 and May 31, 2018. This is the 5th census that has taken place since the City of Spruce Grove opted to conduct an annual municipal census. As in previous years, the City of Spruce Grove employed a successful model whereby residents were provided an opportunity to complete their census online for a period of 3 weeks. Enumerators went door-to-door for a period of 4 weeks to collect data from households that did not complete their census online.

ISL Engineering was contracted to analyze and report on the data that was collected during the 2018 census. Aaron Bomback, Project Planner at ISL Engineering, and Carolynn Grey, Deputy City Clerk at the City of Spruce Grove, will present to Council the 2018 Demographic Report and provide some insights into the community's growth and demographics.
The census project involved an extensive communication campaign, and the City Clerk's Office and Corporate Communications worked in partnership to contribute to the success of this census.
The demographic report will be shared across the organization and will be posted to the City's website once it has been viewed by Council.  The population results will be reported to Municipal Affairs prior to the September 1 reporting deadline.
The census results and demographic report are tools that can be used for future planning purposes. The population growth may also contribute to increased funding opportunities.
