Request for Decision Summary
This presentation details the results of the 2017 City of Spruce Grove Demographic Report. The City of Spruce Grove conducted its annual census between April 5 and May 26, 2017. During this period, a total of 15,193 addresses were enumerated and 52.3% of those households completed their census online. The population of the City of Spruce Grove has grown to 34,881, reflecting a 3.7% increase over 2016.

Proposed Motion
That the 2017 Municipal Census Demographic Report be received as information and that Mr. Phil Kreisel be thanked for his presentation.
The City of Spruce Grove conducts a municipal census annually to obtain an accurate account of the city's population. The results of the census are used not only by the City for project and services planning, but by external entities such as school boards, local businesses, and entrepreneurs looking to bring businesses into our community. Updated population figures will also allow the City of Spruce Grove to access additional grant funding from the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, the Gas Tax Fund, and the Municipal Policing Assistance Grant.

The 2017 municipal census took place between April 5 and May 26, 2017. This is the 4th census that has taken place since the City of Spruce Grove decided to conduct a municipal census on an annual basis. As in previous years, the City of Spruce Grove employed a successful model whereby residents were provided an opportunity to complete their census online for a period of 3 weeks. Enumerators went door-to-door for a period of 4 weeks to collect data from households that did not complete their census online.

Strathcona County was contracted to analyze and report on the data that was collected during the census. Mr. Phil Kreisel, Market Research Officer, is coming before Council to present the 2017 Demographic Report and provide some insights into the community's growth and dynamics.

Highlights of the 2017 municipal census include:
  • 34,881 population counted
  • 15,193 total addresses enumerated
  • 100% addresses completed
  • 52.3% completed by residents online
  • 99.9% of the population counted
  • 3.7% population growth over 2016 municipal census
  • 1.6% error rate
By comparison, the 2016 municipal census recorded a population of 33,640, 47% completion by residents online, population growth of 5% over the 2015 municipal census, and an error rate of 1.3%.
The census project involved an extensive communication campaign, and the City Clerk's Office and Corporate Communications worked in partnership to contribute to the success of this census.
The demographic report will be shared across the organization and will be posted to the City's website once it has been viewed by Council.

The population results will also be reported to Alberta Municipal Affairs.
The census results and demographic report are tools that can be used for future planning purposes. The population growth may also contribute to increased funding opportunities.
