Spruce Grove has a well-balanced arts and culture environment that reflects the interests and needs of the community.

Request for Decision Summary
Members of the Allied Arts Council come before City Council annually to provide an update of their activities over the past year.  This is also an opportunity for Council to present a cheque in the amount of $15,000 to the Allied Arts Council as the City's contribution toward the 2018 visual arts operations.

Proposed Motion
That the Allied Arts Council's 2017 Annual Report be received for information and the presenters be thanked for their contribution to the community.
For over 30 years, the City of Spruce Grove has supported the work of the Allied Arts Council in its mission of promoting and developing the visual arts for the enrichment of our community. In recognition of this mission, the City of Spruce Grove provides an annual fee for service to assist the programs and operation of the Allied Arts Council and the art gallery in the Melcor Cultural Centre.

Over the past year the City's financial contribution has contributed to the following Allied Arts Council activities:
- Hosting Alberta wide arts competitions, local art exhibitions and member shows.
- Providing numerous art classes and workshops for children and adults.
- Supporting the tri-regional high school competition and scholarship prizes.
- Hosting the annual Open Art Competition from which the City purchases artwork to add to the Melcor Development's Municipal Art Collection.

Other revenue generation for the Allied Arts Council operations is achieved through business sponsorship, member fees, government grants, raffles, program registration and fundraising initiatives.
The Allied Arts Council continues to operate their public gallery and gift shop in the Melcor Cultural Centre. This venue offers them a superb, modern setting, continues to support local and regional artists and continues their program of visual arts instruction and programming within the community.

In summary, the Allied Arts Council has, over the years, provided an opportunity for residents to enhance their appreciation of the visual arts and to develop personal artistic skills through information, training and sharing of a wide variety of the fine arts activities.

The Allied Arts Council appreciates the opportunity to meet with City Council annually to discuss the overview and financial reports of their previous year of operations.
