Background/Analysis
The Outstanding Achievement Recognition Policy was developed to bring municipal recognition to Spruce Grove individuals, teams, groups and organizations who have accomplished outstanding achievements in the fields of athletics, fine arts, academics and cultural services at a provincial, national, or international level.

Ben Scrivens was raised in Spruce Grove and spent his youth playing hockey with the Spruce Grove Minor Hockey Association. He played in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Spruce Grove Saints and was named the Saints’ Most Valuable Player of the Year for the 2005-06 season.

Ben had a very successful collegiate hockey career playing for the Cornell Big Red as their starting goaltender. In his senior year, Ben captured the Ken Dryden Trophy as ECAC goaltender of the year, was named to the NCAA All American First Team and was one of the ten finalists for the 2010 Hobey Baker Award.

Ben went on to have a very successful professional hockey career, with time spent in the ECHL, AHL, NHL, and KHL.  During those years Ben received many awards and records; including the AHL Harry (Hap) Holmes Memorial Award for 2011 - 2012 and on January 29th, 2014 he set the NHL Record on  for The Most Saves by a goaltender in a Regular Season Shutout, stopping 59 shots from the San Jose Sharks. Ben played with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, and Montreal Canadians during his tenure in the National Hockey League.

Ben was named to Team Canada in the 2014 World Championships in Minsk, Belarus, where they placed 5th.  The culmination of his 8 year professional goaltending career came in January 2018 when he was named to the Canadian Men’s Ice Hockey Olympic Team.  They competed at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics where they earned an Olympic Bronze Medal.

Congratulations are extended to Ben for his hard work and dedication to his sport.
