In keeping with Policy 6,014 Outstanding Achievement, this presentation will recognize the efforts of the Parkland Pride U-15 Midget Girls Basketball Team for outstanding achievement at a provincial level at the Basketball Alberta championships recently held in Edmonton, Alberta.

Proposed Motion
That the Parkland Pride U-15 Midget Girls Basketball Team be recognized by Council by presenting them with Certificates of Outstanding Achievement for their Gold medal win at the Basketball Alberta Provincial championships held in Edmonton, Alberta on March 11, 2017.

The Outstanding Achievement Recognition Policy was developed to bring municipal recognition to Spruce Grove individuals, teams, groups and organizations who have accomplished outstanding achievements in the fields of athletics, fine arts, academics and cultural activities at a provincial, national, or international level.
The season began with a very young team moving up a division from Bantam U-13 to Midget U-15 girls, so the coaches were not sure what to expect for the season.  It is usually a big jump moving up a division because they knew they would be facing girls that were 15 years old.  The Parkland Pride team was made up of mostly 13 year olds, so they were a very young team coming into the Midget Division for the first time.
The girls exceeded everyone’s expectations and had an unbelievable season.  They finished the regular season with a 15-1 record in the EYBA (Edmonton Youth Basketball Association) and in first place overall out of 21 teams.  It was really an incredible accomplishment for the girls. In the EYBA City Championships they faced St. Albert SLAM in the semifinals and won 70-53 to advance to the City Championships Gold Medal game against Beaumont. They won the gold medal game by a score of 59-39.  They played fantastic and were very deserving of this title – a proud moment for Parkland.
With the win at City’s, the team qualified for the Basketball Alberta Youth Provincials held March 10-11th in Edmonton at The Saville Centre.  The team won the first two Provincial Games against teams from Cochrane (63-31) and Southwest (70-42) to advance to the semifinals game against Okotoks, which they won (51-26), advancing them to the Provincial gold medal game against the winner of the other bracket, Beaumont.  They managed to defeat Beaumont 57-40 in a hard fought battle to win the Gold medal in the 2017 Basketball Alberta Youth Provincials in the Midget Division!  The girls have achieved back to back titles for Parkland Pride, winning Gold in Provincials last year in the Bantam division.  An accomplishment to be proud of!
The coaching staff are very proud and pleased with the way the team played and handled themselves both on and off the court, with respect, pride and class.  It was an incredible season for the Parkland Pride Midget Girls and the season was capped off with the coaches winning the Basketball Alberta / EYBA Phil Allen Memorial Coaching Award for Coaches of Year.  An unbelievable achievement for the community and for the Parkland Basketball Association.

These young athletes are to be congratulated for their dedication and hard work which resulted in a provincial gold medal for their efforts.
