Request for Decision Summary
In keeping with Policy 6,014 Outstanding Achievement, this presentation will recognize the efforts of the St. Peter the Apostle Senior Boys Basketball Team for outstanding achievement at a provincial level at the Alberta Schools Athletic Association Provincial Basketball championships recently held in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Proposed Motion
That the St. Peter the Apostle Senior Boys Basketball Team be recognized by Council by presenting them with Certificates of Outstanding Achievement for their Gold medal win at the Alberta Schools Athletic Association Provincial Basketball championships held in Medicine Hat, Alberta on March 18, 2017.

Background/Analysis
The Outstanding Achievement Recognition Policy was developed to bring municipal recognition to Spruce Grove individuals, teams, groups and organizations who have accomplished outstanding achievements in the fields of athletics, fine arts, academics and cultural activities at a provincial, national, or international level.

Through hard work and determination the Senior Boys basketball team claimed the top prize in the Alberta School Athletic Association’s provincial basketball tournament for Division 3A.  This is their second 3A provincial title in three years.

The team, ranked No. 2 in their division, took home the Edmonton zone championship earlier in March, and then went on to Provincials the weekend of March 16 – 18, 2017.  The weekend began well with a 42 point victory in their first game, against St. Joseph from Grande Prairie.  Later that day they went on to play the Airdrie team, George McDougall High School, defeating them 92 – 64.  Following these games, their final game on the last day of the tournament was against the Camrose Composite High School Trojans.  These teams had met twice during the regular season, with Camrose coming out on top both times.  When it came down to the finals the St. Peter the Apostle Spartans were ready for the challenge claiming a 74 – 63 victory and winning the provincial title for the 2016-2017 season.

These young athletes are to be congratulated for their dedication and hard work which resulted in a provincial gold medal for their efforts.
