will present an update to Council on the "New Beginnings - An Indigenous Engagement Improvement Strategy" initiative.

Proposed Motion
That the "New Beginnings - An Indigenous Engagement Improvement Strategy" update be accepted as information.
Background/Analysis
In 2016 Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) initiated conversations with Alberta Indigenous Relations regarding an increase in the number of Aboriginal families and individuals accessing services. FCSS was invited to submit a grant application for a regional community project that would remove barriers and strengthen economic and social opportunities for urban Aboriginal people in Spruce Grove while enhancing relationships.

Enoch Cree Nation, Paul First Nation, Alexander First Nation, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Tri-Area Metis Local, Government of Alberta Indigenous Relations, Native Counselling Services, Aboriginal Connections Rotary Committee, Town of Stony Plain, Parkland County, local and regional service providers, and residents.
Implementation/Communication
"New Beginnings" seeks to develop a strategic plan to remove barriers and strengthen relationships with urban Aboriginal residents and surrounding communities through engagement.
Impacts
The plan will support Spruce Grove as being an inclusive community. The initiative supports the City of Spruce Grove Social Sustainability and Cultural Master Plans as well as the Modernized Municipal Government Act which takes into account recommendations gleaned from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action.
