Department: Corporate Services
Strategic Vision Element: n/a Related Goal: n/a

Request for Decision Summary
The purpose of this report is to seek the appointment of 5 members to the Task Force on Mayoralty Status. This task force was established by resolution of council on December 12, 2016 with the mandate to review the status of the office of the mayor. Currently, the mayor’s position is considered to be part-time in time commitment and remuneration.

Proposed Motion
That the following City of Spruce Grove residents be appointed to the Task Force on Mayoralty Status:
Mr. Daniel Doornekamp
Mrs. Dorcas Kilduff
Mr. Trevor Norris
Mr. James Trodden
Mr. Rudy A. Zacharias
In 2015, Council established a task force to review council remuneration for the 2017-2021 term of council. In addition to remuneration, the task force was asked to review whether it was warranted to change the office of the mayor from part-time to full-time. They proposed that a task force be struck in early 2017, to review the demands of the office along with the growth and development of the community, and recommend whether or not a full-time mayor is warranted for the City of Spruce Grove.

Council established the Task Force on Mayoralty Status and approved a terms of reference during the December 12, 2016 regular council meeting. The approved terms of reference specified that the task force will be comprised of 3-5 public members who reside in Spruce Grove and meet the eligibility requirements of an elector as prescribed in the Local Authorities Election Act. The review results will be presented to Council at the April 10, 2017 regular council meeting.

Eight public members came forward to volunteer their time on the Task Force on Mayoralty Status. Administration reviewed all applications and is recommending that Mr. Daniel Doornekamp, Mrs. Dorcas Kilduff, Mr. Trevor Norris, Mr. James Trodden, and Mr. Rudy Zacharias be appointed to the task force. Each meet the eligibility requirements and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience from both private and public sectors. This diversity of backgrounds will bring different perspectives and approaches to this review.
Council may choose to appoint a maximum of 5 individuals from the pool of applicants.
This volunteer opportunity was advertised through The One 88.1 radio station, the Spruce Grove Examiner, and the City's website and social media.
Administration will notify the successful applicants and the task force will commence its work as outlined in the terms of reference.
